Nov. 18...Working on Questions for Interviews

Below is a list of some of the big ideas we have wrestled with over the course of the semester. Keep in mind that our goal is to find out how practicing educators are thinking about some of this stuff. Post a suggested interview question based on one of the big ideas. Note: try to ask a question that will put the interviewee at ease and make it more likely that they will open up (example: instead of asking "How do you deal with ethical dilemmas?", you could ask, "Can you describe a time  when, as a teacher, you weren't; sure what the right thing to do was? How did you decide how to proceed?"

·     Progressive v. traditional teaching/schooling
·     Public ed. as public good? Education and free markets…
·     Teacher as change agent?
·     The roles/identities of a teacher
·     Ethical dilemmas?
·     Standardized testing and its effects on teaching/learning
·     Education as meritocracy? Equal Opportunity in ed?
·     How do teachers deal with the problems outside of school in school (e.g., unequal social structures leading to unfair educational opportunities)?
·     Overcoming deficit approaches (Dr. Payne, PhD)

    1. Was there an ethical dilemma that you ran into that you regret the way you handled? How would you have handled that dilemma now?

    2. What changes have you seen in education over time, did you like/dislike them? If you could've made a change to education what would it have been?

  8. 1. Have you ever had students ask you about controversial topics or social injustice issues? How would you go about that?

    2. How would you teach differently if you didn't have to teach with standardized testing in mind? Do you feel like you'd have more freedom? And if you've been able to do so (teach without having to worry about standardized testing) what did you do differently?

  11. Why are the standardized tests too difficult for students? And how would you teach your students if standardized testing didn't exist? Even if standardized testing did exist and was too difficult for the students how you teach the students to make it more understanding for them?

  16. As a teacher, how much of your focus is in preparing students for the standardized exams since many of the qualified candidates are being rejected from professional schools. Students are being screened against a number rather than a whole individual. How much do teachers focus in preparing students on how to be good at multiple-choice test takers?
